The Detroit Lions will be without Tom Kennedy for the rest of the season after the wide receiver suffered a significant knee injury. NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo reported that Kennedy needs surgery to repair damage to his right knee.
The injury is a tough setback for Detroit, which is coming off a 45-21 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Kennedy had served as a key contributor on special teams.
Kennedy suffered the injury during Sunday’s game in Arizona. Initial optimism from head coach Dan Campbell gave way to a more serious outlook after further testing revealed the extent of the damage.
The Lions now face a change at both punt and kick returner. Kennedy had recorded 79 yards on six punt returns and 223 yards on nine kick returns through five games, according to the supplied statistics.
Kennedy’s absence also comes alongside a reported injury to linebacker Devin White, who suffered a broken forearm against Arizona. Losing contributors on both special teams and defense creates another challenge for Detroit.
The Lions enter their Week 6 bye at 3-2, giving the coaching staff time to evaluate replacements. The break could help Detroit reorganize its return unit before its next game.

Detroit is scheduled to host the Green Bay Packers on October 25. The matchup will test the Lions as they look to maintain momentum in the NFC North.
Kennedy’s season-ending injury is an unfortunate blow after his contributions to the team’s return game. Detroit must now find a reliable replacement while managing its other injury concerns.
The bye offers valuable preparation time, but Kennedy’s absence leaves a role the Lions will need to fill before their divisional showdown.
