The Detroit Lions received an encouraging update on safety Kerby Joseph as head coach Dan Campbell expressed optimism about his recovery. Campbell’s brief assessment, “He’s doing well,” offered a positive sign, though it did not provide a timetable for Joseph’s return.
Joseph has been sidelined by a chronic knee issue for more than a year. The injury limited him to six games in 2025, and he has not appeared in a regular-season game this year. Detroit placed him on the physically unable to perform list before the season, meaning he must progress before returning to action.
Campbell also said he expects Joseph to play this season, but stopped short of naming a target date. Detroit cannot count on the All-Pro safety until he is healthy enough to practice and work his way back into game shape.
Joseph’s return would give the secondary a major boost. He earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and has become one of the NFL’s most productive interception threats. He recorded nine interceptions that season and has 20 career interceptions, making his absence a significant loss for Detroit’s coverage plans.
The Lions have managed their safety group without both Joseph and Brian Branch. Branch is also recovering from an Achilles injury, although Detroit has indicated he is closer to returning. Their eventual availability could restore versatility and communication the defense has missed.

Joseph’s range and ball skills help Detroit disguise coverage and challenge throws over the middle, while easing pressure on the replacement safeties.
Detroit entered its bye week at 3-2 and is preparing to face the Green Bay Packers in Week 7.
For now, Campbell’s comments provide cautious optimism, not confirmation of an imminent comeback. Joseph still needs to progress through his recovery, and the Lions must evaluate his readiness before setting a return date.
