Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi has issued a heartfelt apology to his fans in Puerto Rico after the team announced the postponement of their preseason friendly against Independiente del Valle. This decision came as a shock to supporters eager to see the Argentine icon in action during the club's preseason tour.
Messi started the Herons' preseason match against Barcelona S.C. last weekend on February 7, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Unlike the other two friendlies he played for Inter Miami earlier this month, when he couldn't find the back of the net, the Argentine talisman was in red-hot form in Ecuador, delivering a goal and an assist in the first half.
However, the night took a concerning turn when the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner was subbed off in the 58th minute after suffering a muscle strain in his left hamstring.
Lionel Messi Sends Heartwarming Message for Fans in Puerto Rico
After Inter Miami issued an official statement announcing the postponement of the February 13 match for the next two weeks, Messi posted a video message to his fans in Puerto Rico.
The former FC Barcelona captain apologised for the game's postponement. He explained the situation and thanked the Puerto Rican fans for their unwavering support and affection. Messi also expressed his eagerness to visit Puerto Rico soon to play the rescheduled friendly against Independiente del Valle.
In the video, he said, "Hi everyone, I want to send my greetings to the people of Puerto Rico - those who were going to attend the training session and the match. In the last game in Ecuador, I finished with some discomfort and had to come off early. Because of that, together with the organizers and the club, we decided to suspend this match. I hope it can be rescheduled so that we can see each other soon and visit you. I truly appreciate your support and affection. I know tickets had already been sold and everything was organized, so hopefully we can make it happen soon. A big hug to everyone."
The club's friendly against the Puerto Rican side has been rescheduled to February 26 at 7:00 p.m. EST (12:00 a.m. GMT), five days after Inter Miami kicks off their 2026 MLS season vs. LAFC at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
Messi's recovery timeline is currently uncertain. Inter Miami has stated that the 38-year-old's situation is being monitored daily. They also revealed that Messi didn't practice on Wednesday, February 11, due to the lingering muscle strain.
