The Cincinnati Bengals host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Paycor Stadium as they look to bounce back from a 30-27 Week 3 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. While Joe Burrow got strip-sacked in the potential game-winning drive, Jacksonville’s coach, Liam Coen, knows that stopping Joe Burrow will be a major challenge for his team this week.
Burrow is coming off a great offensive performance. The Bengals quarterback completed 28 of 37 passes for 282 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions last week. He opened the game with 14 straight completions.
Speaking to the reporters on Wednesday, Coen reminded his defense not to underestimate Burrow’s accuracy.
“The down-in, down-out accuracy that you just take for granted, I think, in a lot of ways,” Coen said. “The challenging throws, under duress, under pressure, with somebody bearing down on him, and the ball just lands in the spots. He can put the ball wherever he wants.”
The Jaguars coach added that elite QBs like Burrow can put the football wherever they want and rarely miss their targets.
Liam Coen Praises Joe Burrow’s Ability to Extend Plays
Coen also pointed out another part of Burrow’s game that makes him difficult to defend. The Bengals quarterback can extend plays when the pocket breaks down and create opportunities for his receivers.
Burrow’s ability to escape pressure and keep plays alive can give Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins more time to get open. The Jaguars coach shared his feelings on what makes the three-time Pro Bowler special.
“And then you take the ability to extend, which I think is so challenging about his game,” Coen added. “The down is just never over. You might think you have him bottled up, and then all of a sudden he extends, breaks out, and now there’s a whole another play that occurs.”
Jacksonville will rely on edge rushers Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker to put pressure on Burrow. They will face a Cincinnati offensive line led by right tackle Amarius Mims, who has not allowed a pressure on 111 pass-blocking snaps this season.
Through three games, Burrow has completed 70.9% of his passes for 743 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception. He added 32 yards on eight carries.
The Bengals QB is working with a thin wide receiver room. Andrei Iosivas is on injured reserve due to a thumb injury, and rookie Colbie Young has been ruled out for the Week 4 game with a knee issue. The team added WR Mitchell Tinsley and TE Tanner Hudson this week.
