The U.S. soccer legend backed LAFC player Son Heung-min during his current goal-scoring struggles. At the moment, LAFC sits third in the Western Conference, but the South Korean forward’s scoring output has yet to meet expectations.
No one can deny it’s somewhat unusual that, in six matches played so far this MLS season, Son has not scored a single goal, especially considering that in the 2025 season, he scored 12 goals in 13 matches.
For this reason, Landon Donovan spoke on his podcast to show his support for the player.
Son’s scoring drought raises questions as Donovan steps in with support.
In a conversation with Tim Howard on his podcast Unfiltered Soccer, Landon Donovan explained:
“Sonny is on a completely different level than I ever was at any point in my career. He’s going to be fine. He’s impacting the game in a way where, honestly, who cares if he’s not scoring goals.”
And that’s the reality, Sonny may not be scoring goals, but that means he’s assisting his teammates and contributing to the team, rather than focusing only on himself and his stats.
The South Korean forward has six assists in six matches, helping LAFC to five wins and one draw, not counting last Saturday’s loss against the Portland Timbers.
This same situation occurred during Son’s time at Tottenham; he adapted to Harry Kane’s goal-scoring needs, while still contributing goals even during periods of lower output.
After Kane left the club, Son took on the responsibility of being the main scorer to help lift the team, while also becoming the player who pulled the strings for Spurs.
That’s why Landon Donovan, the former LA Galaxy player, called for calm, urging fans not to panic. He reassured supporters that Sonny will be fine and that LAFC’s strong form will continue.
