The Los Angeles Lakers have some of the game's most recognizable stars in one of the NBA's biggest markets, so it's easy to forget about their role players. Veteran guard Marcus Smart has been one of their best ones after signing with them in free agency this past offseason.

The 32-year-old's offensive numbers don't stand out, as he's averaging 9.5 points on 39.9% shooting (33.6% 3-point) over 28.8 minutes. However, his 110.9 defensive rating tops the squad, per NBA Advanced Stats.

Smart's experience and defensive talent are essential qualities for any team chasing a championship. The 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year was recognized for his efforts on Tuesday, and the Lakers congratulated him on social media.

"Congrats to Marcus on being named a finalist for the Teammate of the Year Award," they said.

NBA.com revealed the purpose of the award hours before the team's post.

"The annual honor recognizes the player deemed the best teammate based on selfless play, on and off the court leadership as a mentor and role model to other NBA players, and commitment and dedication to their team," it said.

Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bane, New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, Charlotte Hornets guard Pat Connaughton, Houston Rockets forward Jeff Green, Portland Trail Blazers guard Jrue Holiday, New Orleans Pelicans center DeAndre Jordan, Detroit Pistons guard Duncan Robinson, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, Toronto Raptors guard Garrett Temple, and Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jaylin Williams are also finalists.

Los Angeles are without Smart (ankle) for Tuesday night's home matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers, per the NBA injury report. The three-time All-NBA Defensive First Team honoree has missed its last four games and last played in its 105-104 win over the Orlando Magic on March 21.

The only other Laker on the injury report is LeBron James (foot), who is "questionable." Meanwhile, the Cavaliers are down role players Sam Merrill (hamstring), Jaylon Tyson (toe), and Dean Wade (ankle).

Los Angeles has won three straight games, while Cleveland has won two straight. The Lakers are also 1.5 games ahead of the Denver Nuggets for third place in the Western Conference, and the Cavaliers are one game behind the New York Knicks for third in the East.

The game tips off at 10:30 p.m. ET at Crypto.com Arena.
