The Los Angeles Lakers have had an inconsistent season as injuries have repeatedly disrupted the team’s momentum and raised questions about the ceiling of the current group, especially given their defensive struggles.

Still, any team with LeBron James, even in his age‑41 season, always has a chance to compete. James has built arguably the most impressive legacy in NBA history across 23 seasons as a four‑time MVP, 22‑time All‑Star, 21‑time All‑NBA selection and four‑time NBA champion, winning Finals MVP in each title run.

This year, he has remained a reliable contributor for Los Angeles on both ends of the floor, continuing to impact the game with his driving ability and elite court vision.

Through 43 games, James has averaged 21.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 7.0 assists while shooting 50.2% from the field and 31.7% from beyond the arc.

James has dealt with multiple injuries, including a right‑side sciatica issue that sidelined him for the first 14 games of the season, but he has generally been available outside of back‑to‑backs.

During Thursday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets, James was having another strong performance. He shot 7‑for‑11 from the field and added five rebounds, eight assists, three steals and one block, making his presence felt on both ends.

However, disaster struck late in the fourth quarter when James landed awkwardly on his left elbow after converting a layup. He briefly returned before exiting again with 22 seconds remaining and did not come back.

After the game, head coach JJ Redick told reporters that although James attempted to play through it, the elbow discomfort was significant enough that he ultimately could not continue (h/t Dave McMenamin of ESPN). James spent the postgame period icing the elbow and will undergo further evaluation.

This development increases the likelihood that Los Angeles rules James out for Friday’s home game against the Indiana Pacers. Not only does he typically sit out back‑to‑backs, but now he is also dealing with an injury setback.

As the Lakers fight to stay afloat in the Western Conference and avoid slipping into the play‑in tournament, any extended absence from James would make an already difficult climb even steeper.
