Los Angeles Lakers small forward Dalton Knecht has had an up-and-down tenure during his time in the NBA. The 25-year-old was taken 17th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft and showed a lot of promise during his rookie season, averaging 9.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.8 assists while shooting 37.6% from beyond the arc.
Unfortunately, the Lakers attempted to trade Knecht to the Charlotte Hornets for Mark Williams, a deal that fell through, and Knecht has seemingly lost all confidence since then.
His second year with the purple and gold was a disaster as he took a major step backwards and spent most of the second half in the G League.

The Lakers have had a busy offseason in NBA free agency, and one of their biggest areas of focus has been the forward group.
They signed Sandro Mamukelashvili from the Toronto Raptors to a four-year deal and added both Kevon Looney and Ziaire Williams on one-year deals in an already crowded room that includes Jared Vanderbilt and Jake LaRavia.
Then on Monday, they added another player to the mix, signing former Portland Trail Blazers forward Matisse Thybulle to a one-year contract worth $3.3 million, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
With so many new faces in the group, the Lakers have a decision to make involving Knecht and what role, if any, he has with this team. There are likely six players ahead of him on the depth chart, meaning the Lakers may have no choice but to send him to the G League for the foreseeable future unless injuries arise.
They could also attempt to trade him again, although his value has taken a significant hit and a deal would likely get back very little in return.
Moving players like LaRavia and Vanderbilt to elevate his standing is possible but seems unlikely given the season he just had.
For Knecht, the path forward in Los Angeles has never looked more uncertain, and how the Lakers handle his situation this offseason could define the trajectory of what was once considered a promising young career.
