San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has been with the team since 2017. In that window, they have made the playoffs five times while compiling a record of 82-67. That ranks 13th-best among teams since he took over.
Ahead of his 10th season with San Francisco, Shanahan had a scary incident during the preseason. On July 14, he got in a car crash with a 21-year-old woman in Palo Alto, Calif. The coach later accepted blame for the accident.
As a result of the crash, Shanahan sustained a concussion, broken left hand, broken nose, three broken ribs and 40 stitches above his right eye. He has been recovering these past few weeks.

The 49ers will begin their preseason schedule on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET versus the Tennessee Titans. That will be their first of three preseason games, the second on Aug. 20 and third on Aug. 27.
At the time of the Titans game, it will have been almost a month since Shanahan got in the accident. On Saturday, he spoke on his recovery and his plans for how that game will be coached.
David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard reported the news. Among other things, Shanahan said he was not sensitive to noise, but still has some headaches and fatigue following the car crash. With that said, he plans to coach in Thursday’s game.
It seems like Shanahan will be completely ready to go when the regular season begins. San Francisco’s Week 1 matchup will come on Thursday, Sept. 10 in Australia against the Los Angeles Rams, starting at 8:35 p.m. ET.
For the upcoming Thursday preseason contest, Shanahan has yet to confirm any starters. NFL teams will usually refrain from playing starting players early on in the preseason.
Overall, those players do not appear much in the preseason. For example, 49ers players like quarterback Brock Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner most likely will not play much before the regular season begins.
