The Pittsburgh Pirates have taken a step forward during the 2026 MLB season, entering Wednesday’s game against the Atlanta Braves with a 47-45 record. Only three games back of a National League Wild Card spot, Pittsburgh is continuing to build around one of baseball’s most exciting young cores.
Although the Pirates have lots of work left to do if they want to generate serious momentum, rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin has generated plenty of excitement amongst fans. The ninth overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, Griffin has quickly established himself as one of baseball's top young talents and one of the most complete players on the Pirates’ roster.

However, Griffin's impressive rookie campaign hit an unfortunate roadblock this week after he suffered a torn sagittal band in his left ring finger during a game against the Washington Nationals on July 5. Griffin is expected to miss approximately 8-10 weeks while he recovers in a splint.
After the extent of his injury was announced, Griffin took to his Instagram on Wednesday and shared a heartfelt message alongside his wife, Dendy Griffin.
"All that I need ❤️," Griffin wrote.
The post quickly drew support from fans, as it came just days after the Pirates confirmed that the injury would sideline one of Pittsburgh’s brightest young stars for an extended period. While the injury is disappointing for Griffin and fans alike, the 20-year-old enters the rehabilitation process with an optimistic outlook.
Through the 59 games before his injury, Griffin was slashing .276/.332/.404 with 5 home runs, 25 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. He also provided elite defense in the infield and emerged as a true five-tool player.
Although the timetable likely rules him out for much of the remainder of the regular season, Pittsburgh remains hopeful Griffin will make a full recovery and return in time for a potential postseason push in September.
