ESPN college football announcer Kirk Herbstreit is reminding all athletes of his priorities following Team USA's win over Canada on Sunday.
Team USA topped Canada, 2-1, in the men's hockey gold medal game. Jack Hughes, 24, scored the game-winning goal. Following the game, Hughes spoke of his love for his country.
"This is all about our country right now. I love the U.S.A. I love my teammates, it’s unbelievable," Hughes told NBC. "The USA Hockey brotherhood, it’s so strong. We had so much support from ex-players, and I’m so proud to be American today."
Herbstreit loved the message.
"ONLY in hockey can you lose a couple teeth earlier in a game and come back and hit the game winner! Jack Hughes is a (EXPLETIVE) and a HERO! Congrats boys! Hollebuyck will forever be a legend!" he wrote.
He added: "Both the men and women of @usahockey LOVE THEIR TEAMMATES and LOVE THEIR COUNTRY!!! The way it’s suppose to be! Hell YEAH!!! Congratulations and THANK YOU to both teams! USA USA USA."
There had been some conflicting messaging coming from U.S. athletes at the 2026 Winter Games.
Many of them admitted that they were conflicted on how to feel about representing their country during this time.
U.S. skier Hunter Hess was among those who said he wasn't sure how prideful to be about representing his country right now.
"I love the United States of America. I cannot say that enough," Hess later clarified.
"My original statement, I felt like I said that, but apparently some people didn't take it that way. I'm so happy to be here, so happy to represent Team USA."
The 2026 Winter Games wrapped up on Sunday.
