Tributes are pouring in on social media after a former Baylor Bears women's college basketball star died at 35 years old.
Melissa Jones, a standout guard for the Baylor Bears in the late 2000s and early 2010s, has passed away.
The former Baylor star, who wore No. 5, had her jersey retired by the program following a stellar career. She was named the Big 12's Sportsperson of the Year in 2011.
“Melissa Jones left her mark on Baylor University, not just women’s basketball. She was loved by the entire Waco community. Everything she did for us was full speed,” former Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. “She played the game the way every player should—always had energy, played hard, and was a great leader. Her teammates respected her because she represented everything—her effort, her caring, her knowledge and her toughness were unmatched. She was the “glue” that kept the team together good times and bad."
Jones starred for the Lady Bears from 2008-11 and later joined the Baylor volleyball team for the 2012 season.

“Melissa lived a life full of accomplishments—too many to list—but clearly reflected in the countless lives she touched,” the obituary said. “Known for her warmth and radiant spirit, Melissa was a bright light to all who had the privilege of knowing her.”
Tributes are pouring in on Thursday
"This one hurts deeply. You couldn't find a harder worker. You couldn't find a more genuine person. She lived life the way she played basketball (well, any sport) – full throttle and with all the passion and love she could give. MJ, may you rest in the love, joy, and peace of the God you served so well, even when it was hard. Thank you for giving me the blessing of calling you friend," one fan wrote.
"Sending love and prayers to her family, her friends, her loved ones, and to the members of our coaching staff who knew her, coached her, and cared for her. Holding everyone touched by this loss in our hearts today 🤍," one fan added.
"Melissa Jones was among my favorite athletes to interview over my 44-years in the business. She was the glue among so many stars at Baylor with such a sweet smile and big heart and tough as nails with a motor was always full-throttle. RIP Melissa Jones," one fan added.
Our thoughts are with her friends and family members.
