Kevin Gausman didn't need long to identify what stands out most about his new team. After making a winning debut for the Chicago Cubs in Friday night's 6-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals, the veteran right-hander credited Chicago's defense for making an immediate impact behind him.
Gausman, who was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays before the trade deadline, allowed two earned runs over seven innings as the Cubs extended their winning streak to five games. His outing helped Chicago improve to 68-49, moving within 4.5 games of the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central.
Speaking after the game, Gausman praised the athleticism and effort of the Cubs' defenders. Marquee Sports Network shared the veteran's postgame comments on X, where he highlighted the energy and confidence the defense provided throughout his first start with the club.
"Man, I can't say enough about this defense," Gausman said. "You notice it right away. Guys are running all over the place, putting their body on the line. A lot of fun."
His comments came after several standout defensive plays throughout the night, including a diving catch by center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong that helped preserve Chicago's lead during a key late-inning sequence.
Gausman also delivered exactly what the Cubs hoped for after acquiring him from Toronto. Despite taking a line drive off his ankle in the first inning, he stayed in the game and completed seven innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out four and walking one on 96 pitches.

The outing matched Gausman's longest start of the season and gave Chicago another quality performance from a rotation that has helped fuel the club's recent surge. It also marked an encouraging beginning to his tenure with the Cubs as they continue adding veteran pieces for the stretch run.
Friday's victory kept the Cubs firmly in the race for the NL Central title. With Gausman making an immediate impact on the mound and praising the club's defensive identity after his debut, Chicago carried even more momentum into the remainder of its road series against Kansas City.
