The Chicago Cubs right-hander Kevin Gausman provided an update Thursday on his left shoulder, which he injured during a start against the Miami Marlins, according to 670 The Score’s Bruce Levine.
Gausman exited Wednesday’s 3-2 loss at Wrigley Field in the sixth inning after diving to tag a runner at third base. The 35-year-old had thrown 101 pitches at that point. He allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters after the game that the injury was due to the play and nothing else. Fortunately, Gausman suffered the injury on his non-pitching arm. Levine reported that Gausman is getting treatment for the injury, but there was no timetable for his return.
After Wednesday’s loss, the Cubs still need one win or an Arizona Diamondbacks loss to clinch a National League Wild Card spot. If so, Gausman would be lined up to start in either Game 1 or Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series.
This year has been a bit of a struggle for Gausman. He has a 9-12 record with a 4.51 ERA in 32 starts this season between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Cubs, who acquired him at the trade deadline in August. With Chicago, Gausman is 4-2 with a 4.83 ERA in nine starts.

Chicago just needs one win to clinch a postseason berth. That’s why Gausman’s soreness could become a bigger problem if it lingers, forcing the Cubs to rework their postseason rotation plans for a staff that has had 10 pitchers make at least eight starts this season.
