These days, NBA All-Star Weekend feels like a giant reunion — players laughing on the bench, swapping jerseys, and looking more like friends than fierce competitors. But it wasn’t always like that. Back when rivalries ran hot and pride mattered just as much as the spotlight, the smiles you saw on camera didn’t always tell the full story.

According to Kevin Garnett, the atmosphere behind the scenes could be a lot more tense than fans realized. Sharing a locker room during All-Star events meant standing shoulder to shoulder with players you’d battled all season, guys like Tim Duncan and David Robinson and that didn’t magically erase years of competition.

On the surface, everything looked relaxed. But underneath, there was still an edge, a quiet reminder that even in celebration, rivalries never fully left the room.

In a recent episode of his show, ‘KG Certified’ the former Boston man was joined by his former teammate, Paul Pierce. While speaking about his rivalry with the likes of Tim Duncan and David Robinson he said, “David Robinson, Timmy, and it ain’t cool. It ain’t cool. We got to take pictures. Boom. We take one picture. I YELL IN HIS FACE. BOOm. WE go back to BOOM. It wasn’t cool P. I’m just being honest. In your own locker room. David Stern come in, guys. Thank you. Woo. Woo. It ain’t cool. You see the old pictures. Go back and look at the All-Star pictures. Just look at everybody face. It’s a smile, but it’s like it ain’t cool. You know, energy speaks”

The rivalry between Kevin Garnett and the San Antonio Spurs was built on contrasting styles. Garnett brought intensity, emotion, and constant energy, while Tim Duncan and David Robinson represented the Spurs’ calm, disciplined approach.

Early on, KG battled them as the face of the Minnesota Timberwolves, and later with the Boston Celtics, where the rivalry grew into a clash of championship cultures. There wasn’t much public trash talk, but the respect and competitive tension were obvious. However for Duncan, it was him who came out on top more often than not and has more rings to prove for it as well.
