Will the Indiana Fever retain Kelsey Mitchell for the 2027 season? That’ll be a very popular question this WNBA offseason, make no mistake about it.
Mitchell, a four-time All-Star, has been with the Fever since the 2018 season. Although she’s now 30 years old, she’s coming off a season where she averaged 24.7 points per game. Her ability to light up the boxscore alongside Caitlin Clark is a huge asset to Stephanie White and Indiana’s coaching staff.
Following a tough season-ending loss, Mitchell was asked if there’s anything the Fever can take away from Game 3 and build on for the 2027 season. Despite being an unrestricted free agent, she sounds determined to stay with the Fever.
“Being a part of playoffs, that’s what it’s all about, to get the experience, to figure out where you got to be better at, to figure out what your flaws is, to figure out what your weaknesses are. I think as a group, we still getting our feet wet on the playoff experience side. And we played against a team that is full of playoff experience. And so that speaks for itself,” Mitchell said. “I think all we can do is keep fighting our best to be able to get in these positions, to be able to get the experience. I think that you look at the film, you take your preseason and use it for what it is. And I think we put ourselves in a position to be back here hopefully next year.”

Is bringing Mitchell back the right move for Indiana?
While some fans want Mitchell back for the 2027 season, others believe the Fever should move on from the veteran guard.
“Good. Extending her is objectively better than her walking for nothing. They desperately need athletes tho,” a Fever fan sad.
“She has a lot of value and is an older player. Let her go get a max deal for some players and free up $$ when you have to pay CC a max deal next year,” another fan argued.
“I love Kelsey, but after watching this year. Her and Caitlin are very similar, they were to leg tired down the stretch of the season. That is the reason their shooting faded. They need to be split up in my opinion for the both of them. I hate saying that too,” a third fan commented.
The Fever will have a few tough decisions to make this offseason as Sophie Cunningham is also set to be a free agent.
