New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson became the first NFL owner of the season to give a clear indication that the current results her struggling team is going through is unacceptable, which all but means that head coach Kellen Moore is officially on the hot seat and could lose his job at almost any point this season.
“As the owner, the responsibility does start with me,” Benson said on Tuesday. “I will not make excuses and I will not accept this level of performance as our standard. I am committed to making the decisions necessary to improving this team. Everyone on this organization understands the urgency. We must prepare better, execute consistently and correct mistakes that are costing us the games.”
Naturally, Benson’s comments were brought up with Moore at his press conference on Wednesday. Moore stated that the goal remains the same and that the team simply needs to get better.
“It’s where we’re at. We’re 1-4, missed a few opportunities right there,” Moore said. “We all want the same thing. We’re all shooting for that. We’ve all got the same objectives and we just gotta get better moving forward.”
What are his chances?
Perhaps the one thing that is giving him some hope even amid the team’s struggles is that the offense is looking much better than it did last year. But all of that positive momentum stalled with their brutal performance against the Vikings this past week.
It probably shouldn’t be a surprise that Moore has some of the highest odds of getting fired in the NFL right now. As of this morning, Kalshi gave him a 16-percent chance of being the next head coach to lose their job in one way or another, behind only Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn and Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni.

The Saints’ next two games are against the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers. If the Saints lose both of those games and fall to 1-6 before their Week 8 bye week, it would theoretically give the team plenty of time to fire Moore and put an interim coach in place for the second half of the season.
Simply put, Moore needs to coach his butt off in these next two weeks.
