The SNY broadcast booth had quite the conversation during Wednesday night’s game between the New York Mets and Tampa Bay Rays.
With the Mets leading 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Ron Darling brought up how Tampa Bay’s MLB franchise was initially named the Devil Rays before they became the Rays.
“That was the actual name of a fish, you know,” Gary Cohen said. “But too much satanic connotation, too much for some people.”
Keith Hernandez couldn’t wait to share his two cents on Tampa Bay’s name change. The five-time All-Star first baseman immediately interjected, “Very woke.”
Cohen and Darling couldn’t help but chuckle at that remark from Hernandez.
This isn’t the first time Keith has gone viral.
Back in July, there was a moment during a Mets-Royals game where Hernandez talked about his family lineage coming to an end.
“My two (kids) are in their 40s, they’re not going to have kids,” Hernandez said. “I won’t go into one of them. That’s not gonna happen. So, the (family) line is burnt. It’s burnt. It just burned down. There’s no passing down. We’re done. My brother and I are done, we’re done.”
Suffice to say, Hernandez has no filter when it comes to his in-game commentary.
