The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have landed two intriguing prospects in wide receiver Ted Hurst and cornerback Keionte Scott during the middle rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft. Both players have the talent to outperform their draft positions, but their paths to success in Tampa Bay look very different.
If forced to choose which player has the better chance to become a contributor early in his career, Keionte Scott gets the nod.
That isn't a knock on Hurst. In fact, his athleticism makes him an exciting developmental prospect. The problem is opportunity.
The Buccaneers have one of the deepest wide receiver rooms they've had in years. Chris Godwin Jr. remains one of the team's leaders and most reliable targets when healthy. First-round pick Emeka Egbuka is expected to play a significant role immediately, while second-year receiver Jalen McMillan appears ready to develop more fully into a bigger presence.
Even if Hurst proves that he belongs at the NFL level, finding meaningful offensive snaps could be difficult. He may ultimately become a quality contributor, but becoming a star in Tampa Bay's offense seems unlikely given the amount of talent already ahead of him on the depth chart.
Hurst faces a crowded depth chart
Scott's situation is considerably different.
The Buccaneers have invested heavily in their secondary over the last several seasons, but questions remain about the group's long-term consistency. Unlike wide receiver, there is a realistic opportunity for Scott to carve out a role relatively early if he performs well this summer.
Scott also arrives in Tampa Bay with an impressive collegiate résumé. He demonstrated versatility throughout his college career, contributing both as a defensive back and on special teams. Those traits are exactly what NFL coaching staffs look for when determining which young players deserve opportunities on game day.
Perhaps most importantly, Scott plays a position where the Buccaneers could use additional playmakers. Cornerbacks are constantly rotating throughout games, and injuries are common during an NFL season. If Scott proves he can be dependable in coverage and contribute on special teams, his opportunities could come much sooner rather than later.
Both rookies have intriguing upside, and both could eventually become valuable members of Tampa Bay's roster. However, when considering both talent and opportunity, Keionte Scott appears to have the clearer path to making an impact in 2026.
