Kayshon Boutte arrived with the Houston Texans, a team with a crowded receiver room, as a replacement, not a guaranteed starter. The Texans acquired him after Jayden Higgins suffered a season-ending ACL injury, creating an immediate need behind Nico Collins.
The Texans needed another receiver, but that does not mean Boutte was handed Higgins’ old role. Collins is coming off his second straight Pro Bowl selection and remains the team’s established No. 1 receiver. This leaves Boutte to compete with Xavier Hutchinson, Jaylin Noel and Jared Wayne, while Tank Dell begins the season on IR.
The trade happened at an awkward time for Boutte. He joined after the Texans’ preseason games, meaning he did not get a normal runway to build chemistry with C.J. Stroud. He also did not immediately participate in team drills during the Texans’ joint practice with the Panthers.
That matters because receivers depend heavily on timing with their quarterback. Hence the challenge remains for Boutte, as he said per 98.5 The Sports Hub, “I think my second year was still a little that, it was more 50/50. But at the beginning of last year, offseason, when Vrabel and them came in was when my mindset shifted. So, I think that was big for me.”
Boutte Has a Path to the Starting Job, but He Must Turn the Opportunity Into Production

Higgins’ ACL injury was the actual reason the Texans went shopping for another receiver. Houston believed Boutte was capable of helping replace some of what Higgins brought.
Boutte’s 2025 season was his best NFL campaign. In 14 games, he produced 33 catches, 551 yards and six touchdowns, while averaging 16.7 yards per reception. The Texans, therefore, are not betting on an unproven rookie. They are betting on a 24-year-old receiver who showed real growth in New England.
Yes, Collins, Hutchinson and Noel are ahead of him in the expected Week 1 lineup, but the Texans’ receiver hierarchy is unsettled behind Collins. Boutte has his experience as his advantage. He has already played three NFL seasons and knows what an NFL weekly routine looks like.
Boutte is entering the final year of his rookie contract, so 2026 is more than another season. He has already explained that his desire for a bigger role with the Patriots was tied to his contract situation. Now, Houston gives him the chance to earn that role on a new team. If he becomes a dependable target for Stroud, his value changes before free agency.
