WNBA fans have been wondering: Will Team USA change its starting lineup now that it is entering the knockout, medal round at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup?
The question was asked to Team USA head coach Kara Lawson on Wednesday. Fans are particularly interested if guards like Caitlin Clark and/or Paige Bueckers could have their roles elevated. Clark and Bueckers are two of the best players in the WNBA. However, at the international level, their roles have been reduced to bench players, as veterans like Jackie Young get starting spots.
Lawson, though, has no interest in changing Clark’s role. The Team USA head coach is sticking with her starting lineup. She’s not planning on giving the 2024 No. 1 overall WNBA Draft pick a bigger role.

Lawson says that she’s refusing to mess with her starting five chemistry right now. Team USA had a close, 55-52 win over Italy, but had blowout wins against China and Czechia in the other two games.
“I like where we are right now,” she told reporters.
Fans react to lack of changes from Team USA
Fans are weighing in on the lack of changes to Team USA’s starting five.
“Caitlin Clark is currently #1 in the WNBa combined points per game and assists (30.9), so it makes perfect sense to not start her. I don’t know if this is dumb, deranged or both,” one fan wrote.
“Really? Your bench has repeatedly outperformed your starters. Clark leads the team in plus/minus and offensive creation. Bueckers and Howard have been among your most impactful players. The offense has looked best when the younger group changes the pace,” one fan added.
“If Team USA loses to France, the blame should solely go to this person 👇 Anyone with two eyes watching the games sees that they are NOT starting the Best 5. The +/- data proves it. But Coach Lawson is blind to it! 🤦♀️,” one fan added.
