The Kansas City Chiefs finished with a 6-11 record during the 2025 NFL season. Kansas City missed the playoffs, and it appears as if they are heading towards a rebuild rather than being a contender again in the AFC for the 2026 NFL season.
Adam Schefter of espn.com reported on Twitter, "ESPN sources: the Chiefs and Rams are working on a blockbuster trade that would send All-Pro CB Trent McDuffie to Los Angeles for a package that would include the 29th overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft. McDuffie would be expected to sign a long-term deal with the Rams." He would also add that Kansas City is acquiring a fifth and sixth round picks in 2026 and a third-round pick in 2027.
This is a huge addition for the Los Angeles Rams. They needed a cornerback badly. Trent McDuffie is only 25 years old. Last season with the Chiefs, he recorded 63 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, one interception, and seven pass deflections.
NFL Analyst Nick Wright Weighs in on the Kansas City Chiefs Trading Trent McDuffie

Nick Wright is a huge Chiefs fans and he is on his show First Things First on FS1 Monday thru Fridays. He loves to tweet about Kansas City football. When Wright saw the latest Chiefs trade, he no doubt had to tweet about it. He said, "The Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill in March of 2022* for: The 29th pick + a 2nd, 2 4ths & a 6th. The Chiefs just traded Trent McDuffie in March of 2026 for: The 29th pick + a 3rd, a 5th & a 6th. Basically got about 85% of the Tyreek return for McDuffie. *Won the next 2 SBs."
The truth is this time around; Kansas City is not a contender. Trading McDuffie for extra draft picks means that this team has major holes on the roster and they need to rebuild the team outside of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. With Mahomes having a torn ACL, many will wonder if next season will be a punt year for the Chiefs in order to get another high draft pick.
With the latest trade from the Rams, Kansas City will now have the ninth overall pick and the 29th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Los Angeles is trying to win Super Bowl LXI next season. As for the Chiefs, they are trying to make major changes through the roster by acquiring more picks and they may not be done doing so.
