Justin Fields is joining the Chiefs to serve as their bridge quarterback while Patrick Mahomes recovers from a torn ACL and LCL. Mahomes injured his knee in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15. While he might return by Week 1, his status is still uncertain, which prompted Kansas City to bring in Fields as insurance.
Kansas City acquired Fields from the New York Jets in March 2026 in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick. When the trade broke, many assumed Andy Reid would deploy Fields the way the Pittsburgh Steelers did.
In the Steelers, Fields often entered the game specifically to exploit his athleticism with designed runs, jet sweeps, and goal-line packages while Russell Wilson was the primary quarterback.
However, Reid dismissed that idea. He made it clear that Fields was brought in to play traditional quarterback and is more than just a specialized athlete. Speaking at the Annual League Meeting in Phoenix, the head coach drew a clear line around how he views Fields' job title in Kansas City.

"He's more than a gadget guy. That's not how I'm looking at him. That's not why we brought him in," Reid said via Athletics. "We brought him in to play quarterback if he's needed to play quarterback. And if Pat can't play for whatever reason, now you've got a legitimate guy in there that can play and win games for you."
Reid also praised Fields as a legitimate signal-caller, adding, "I like his game. He can do the drop-back game, he can do the movement stuff, play-action, whether it's a naked or a sprint-out game. He has that whole package.”
He sees the 27-year-old as a natural fit for the Chiefs' technical requirements, especially their signature screen game. He explained that Fields "understands the screen game and how to set it up," noting that his physical tools make him "one of the better athletes on the field."
Fields’ track record is quite mixed but shows potential. With the Jets in 2025, he started nine games and completed 62.7% of his passes for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception.
But he struggled with 27 sacks and a 2-7 record before an injury ended his season in December. However, his 4-2 stint as a starter in Pittsburgh in 2024 showed he can operate effectively within a structured system.
Meanwhile, Pat is reportedly spending around seven hours a day at the team facility for treatment and rehabilitation. While general manager Brett Veach noted Mahomes is there from early morning until mid-afternoon, Reid has maintained he will not commit to a firm Week 1 timeline yet.
There is no denying that Fields joins a much better supporting cast in the Chiefs than he had in New York, including Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, Travis Kelce, and newly signed running back Kenneth Walker. So, whether he starts Week 1 or stays on the sideline remains to be seen.
