Kansas City Chiefs left tackle Josh Simmons has yet to play in 2026 due to a bulging disc in his back. He provided optimism Wednesday when he was able to practice for the first time in nearly two months. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has admirably returned from a torn ACL and LCL in his knee, but he has faced pressure and has been sacked six times.
Simmons was a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and played just eight games as a rookie. Undrafted free-agent rookie Kahlil Benson has filled in during Simmons’ absence. Benson was slated to be the starting right tackle and moved to the left side to protect Mahomes’ blind side. Benson has been good blocking in the running game. His 75.1 run block grade from Pro Football Focus ranks 17th of 72 qualified tackles. His pass blocking has not been good, though, as his 44 grade ranks 69th.

Benson has allowed 10 total pressures in pass protection, six hits and no sacks. All things considered, the 6-foot-6, 319-pounder has performed well for as little experience as he has had at left tackle. When Simmons returns, Benson will likely shift back to right tackle where veteran Jaylon Moore has played.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday the team would ease Simmons back in. He’ll likely be questionable for Week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
