After making a College Football Playoff appearance in 2024, the Tennessee Volunteers took a step back. The Volunteers went just 8-5 and lost to the Illinois Fighting Illini 30-28 in the Music City Bowl.
Now, into the offseason, Josh Heupel and his staff have put an emphasis on high school recruiting. Tennessee has put together a 2027 recruiting class that ranks 17th in the nation with four commitments. However, it was up to five players until taking a considerable hit on Friday.
Cornerback Kamauri Whitfield committed to Tennessee on Oct. 15. In his junior season at The First Academy, he racked up 13 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one hurry and three pass deflections.

Along with solid production, Whitfield was a three-star recruit, the No. 48 cornerback and the No. 520 player in the nation, per Rivals Industry Rankings. At 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, he was a solid pickup for the Volunteers.
However, he's since had a change of heart. On Friday, Rivals' Chad Simmons reported that Whitfield has decommitted from Tennessee. He becomes the first player the Volunteers have had decommit in the 2027 cycle.
Several other teams have expressed interest in the cornerback. Whitfield has official visits lined up with the Florida Gators, Oregon Ducks, Nebraska Cornhuskers and Virginia Tech Hokies.
Unfortunately for Tennessee, following his decision, the Volunteers have been left without any cornerbacks in the 2027 cycle. However, they do have offers to a handful of talented players at the position.
