Running back Jonathan Taylor has been one of the top at his position since he entered the league in 2020. Now in his seventh NFL season, he remains one of the best in the business at age 27.
He has spent every one of those seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. To this point, he has appeared in 90 games for them and accumulated north of 8,000 rushing yards as well as north of 1,600 yards receiving.
That being said, the Colts have only made the playoffs one time during Taylor’s tenure, that being his rookie year in 2020. They fell in the Wild Card to the Buffalo Bills in what was quarterback Josh Allen’s first postseason win.

All of this losing has led to speculation about Taylor’s future with the team. This season, he has carried the ball 122 times for 492 yards and seven touchdowns. He has added 15 receptions for 163 yards through the air.
These speculations do come at an odd time, as Taylor just inked a two-year, $44 million contract extension in August. That will theoretically keep him in Indianapolis through the 2028 season.
Still, James Boyd of The Athletic reported Thursday of Taylor’s answer to a question about his future. The RB said he has not given it any thought and thinks that it would be disrespectful to the team to think about hypotheticals.
A theoretical trade would be even harder to imagine with that extension he only just signed. $22 million owed to a running back over the next two seasons is a tall hurdle for a team to jump and deal with.
The last blockbuster trade deadline deal involving an RB would be the Christian McCaffrey trade from 2022. He has fared quite well since the trade, and remains very effective into his thirties.
For the moment, Taylor and the Colts are focused on Week 7. They will travel up north to face the Minnesota Vikings at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. Minnesota is undefeated and has a formidable defense, so it will be a tough test for a 2-4 Colts team.
The trade deadline is Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. ET.
