Former WWE announcer Jonathan Coachman has shared his belief that Road Dogg’s exit from the Stamford-based promotion was connected to his efforts to push for Chelsea Green behind the scenes.
Speaking exclusively to “Hard Rock Bet,” Coachman discussed WWE’s current creative direction and reflected on what he saw during “WWE Unreal.” Coachman pointed to Road Dogg as someone who was willing to speak up during creative discussions.
“Well, there was only one person that ever spoke up in that meeting with one Unreal. And guess what happened to him? Road Dogg got cut. He got fired and he is one of the best friends of Triple H.”
Coachman later returned to the subject while discussing changes he believes WWE should make to its creative team.
“And to me, right now, none of the creative has gotten the axe outside of Road Dogg, and he didn’t get the axe because of anything other than fighting for Chelsea Green.”
Road Dogg had been one of Green’s strongest supporters behind the scenes. During his time on WWE’s creative team, he regularly pushed for ideas that would elevate the former Women’s United States Champion and give her a more prominent role on television.
That support was also highlighted on “WWE Unreal.” One notable creative discussion showed Road Dogg pitching a championship storyline involving “The Hot Mess” while facing resistance from higher-ups.
Green has since enjoyed a major breakthrough in 2026. She won a five-woman ladder match at SummerSlam to become the Interim WWE Women’s Champion, later giving Road Dogg another reason to publicly celebrate her success.
Road Dogg Stepped Down From His WWE Creative Role
Brian James, better known as Road Dogg, left his position as SmackDown’s co-head writer in March 2026. However, his departure was described as a resignation rather than a release.
James later addressed the decision during a virtual autograph signing. He said the wrestling business was moving too fast for him and explained that he wanted to spend more time with his family.
He also admitted that he no longer felt he had much purpose in the creative room because he was not involved in WWE’s final decision-making process.
His exit came amid broader changes within WWE’s creative structure and after his appearances on the second season of “WWE Unreal” generated discussion among fans.
Road Dogg remains connected to WWE through a separate Legends contract despite stepping away from his backstage role.
Coachman’s comments offer a different interpretation of the situation, particularly because of Road Dogg’s vocal support for Green. James, however, has publicly given his own reasons for leaving the creative team.
During the same interview, Coachman also discussed his experience working with “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and recalled how seriously the WWE Hall of Famer took professional wrestling.
