Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider explained why one of his most reliable relievers was unavailable during Tuesday’s 6-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
Tyler Rogers was not available out of the bullpen as Toronto tried to protect a late lead. Schneider said the veteran right-hander needed a day off despite his unusual submarine delivery.
Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet shared Schneider’s explanation on X.
“When a guy throws 83 from down under, you think you can pitch them every day. I wish he could… but he’s got the same restrictions as everybody,” Schneider said.
Rogers has been one of Toronto’s most dependable relievers this season. He entered Tuesday with a 2-2 record, 1.73 ERA and 1.153 WHIP across 67.2 innings.
The right-hander has also made 70 appearances, tied for the team lead, while recording four saves. He had thrown a scoreless inning in his previous outing against the Baltimore Orioles.
Without Rogers available, Toronto had to rely on other options late in the game. Gus Varland threw 31 pitches in the ninth inning before Detroit scored the winning run following a fielding error.
The Blue Jays had been in position to secure an important victory after José Soriano carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Detroit eventually rallied and handed Toronto another costly loss.

Toronto fell to 75-76 with the defeat and remains one game behind the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Wild Card race. The Seattle Mariners also remain within reach at 75-75.
With the postseason race entering its final weeks, Toronto cannot afford many more missed opportunities. Schneider will need his bullpen rested and available as the Blue Jays continue fighting for a playoff spot.
