Joey Porter Jr.'s Limited Work Opened Door for Daylen Everette at Minicamp

Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin often described the team's developmental phase of the offseason with the phrase, “iron sharpens iron.” That mindset was on full display during the Steelers' mandatory minicamp, where new head coach Mike McCarthy got a close look at several promising rookies. One standout matchup featured third-round pick Daylen Everette going head-to-head with All-Pro wide receiver DK Metcalf.

With Joey Porter Jr. limited during minicamp, Everette received additional opportunities and capitalized on them. Facing Metcalf, he turned heads by holding his own against one of the league's top receivers. Everette broke up multiple passes and delivered one of the most impressive performances of any rookie during minicamp.

Bulldog Mentality a Perfect Steelers Fit

Everette entered the draft process with several notable concerns in his scouting report. Most evaluators viewed his coverage skills as raw and in need of technical refinement. However, his competitiveness has never been in question. As a Georgia Bulldog, he built a reputation as a tough, high-motor cornerback who consistently competed at a high level.

Everette faced plenty of elite talent in the SEC, and he welcomed the challenge of matching up against Metcalf. He also understands how those reps can accelerate his development at the next level.

"He's a big physical guy, so going against someone like him, it can help me to guard anyone else," Everette told ESPN's Brooke Pryor. "I enjoy going against him because I know it's helping me get better."

Everette has the right attitude, a Bulldog mentality, and continues to build momentum as one of the Steelers' most promising rookies. Pryor wasn't the only observer who took notice.

Rookie on the Rise

Everette has drawn praise not only from ESPN's Pryor but also from several Steelers beat reporters. Some have even labeled him the clear standout of OTAs and mandatory minicamp. His strong early performances have challenged veteran players and could eventually put him in the conversation for a starting role.

Still, his biggest test remains ahead. The Steelers will soon report to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where the intensity of training camp will ramp up significantly. The heat won't come only from the summer sun beating down on the practice fields, it will come from the heightened level of competition as well.

Fortunately, Everette knows a thing or two about competing in demanding conditions. SEC afternoon kickoffs and practices in Athens, Georgia, were hardly conducted in cool weather.

The bottom line: if there's one rookie Steelers fans should be most excited to watch heading into training camp, it's Everette.
