The soccer world was shook as Brazil pulled off a late miracle over Japan on Monday. Gabriel Martinelli scored the game-winner in stoppage time, sealing a 2-1 victory that hyped fans, including Joel Embiid.
The Philadelphia 76ers center witnessed the five-time FIFA World Cup champions advance to the Round of 16. Kaishu Sano gave Japan the lead with a goal in the 29th minute before Casemiro tied the game 27 minutes later. Both teams had chances to take the lead, but strong goalkeeping kept the matchup at 1-1.
Embiid shared his excitement on X, expressing his support for the Brazilians after the final whistle.
"VAMOS BRASIL!!!!! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷," Embiid wrote.
Brazil will await the winner of the Norway-Ivory Coast game on Tuesday at Dallas Stadium. Their Round of 16 matchup is set for Sunday at 4 p.m. ET at New York New Jersey Stadium.
Meanwhile, Embiid was limited to only 38 games last season. He started the campaign on a minutes restriction to manage his left knee injury. The 32-year-old also faced restrictions in back-to-back sets.
The 76ers reached the playoffs, but the New York Knicks defeated Embiid and Co. 4-0 in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Philadelphia bolstered its guard rotation by drafting Labaron Philon Jr. out of Alabama at No. 22. He provides the team with more depth and versatility, as he can also play at the two spot.
The 76ers could also add veteran help in free agency to surround Embiid and Tyrese Maxey with more talent for the upcoming season.
