Several years ago Jayden Daniels became just the third LSU player in history to win the Heisman Trophy. As he feuds with his alma mater over NIL and jersey numbers, the Tigers' second-ever Heisman Trophy winner was asked to share his thoughts.
But it might not surprise you to learn that Cincinnati Bengals QB and LSU legend Joe Burrow doesn't really have any thoughts on the matter. Speaking to reporters last night following his team's preseason win over the Detroit Lions, Burrow said he hadn't even heard about it until a few hours prior and that he didn't have anything to say or contribute to the conversation.
“I just heard about it a couple hours ago,” Burrow said, via ProFootballTalk. “I don’t necessarily have too many thoughts at this time. I just — I don’t know enough about the situation to have any thoughts, I would say.”
Burrow was then asked about the status of his No. 9 jersey at LSU, which has become a source of some contention due to Daniels' reported desire not to his own No. 5 reissued. He said that he was told the team wouldn't be reissuing it but admitted he can "never know what happens."
“They told me that they wouldn’t use it again but, you know, you never know — you never know what happens," Burrow said.

The Situation
Allegedly, the situation arose from LSU sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett changing his jersey number to 5. Under LSU's previous head coach Brian Kelly, who had coached Daniels, Pickett was not allowed to wear that number. However, once Lane Kiffin replaced Kelly, Kiffin was apparently happy to give Daniels' old number to Pickett.
This is believed to be one of the main reasons that Daniels sent a cease-and-desist letter to LSU over name, image and likeness and is even believed to be demanding that the school give him his Heisman Trophy back from display.
It's a bizarre situation to say the least and just as bizarre that Burrow has gotten dragged into it.
