Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt had a pretty awkward moment on Sunday.

The CBS No. 1 NFL broadcasting team was on the call of the New England Patriots’ win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. New England rebounded from a Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks with an impressive home win over Pittsburgh, which was coming off a victory against Atlanta.

Nantz and Watt were discussing the Steelers in 2026, as they’re led by former Packers coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“Of course the big story was Mike McCarthy getting a chance to return to the Steel City, move back basically to the same neighborhood where he was raised,” Nantz said. “He’s about a mile from the home he was raised in, his sisters live close by, his mom and dad are also just a minute drive away. It’s just storybook for Mike.”

Watt then recalled what happened in Week 1.

“It was truly incredible to listen to him talk about how he drives past his childhood home every day, and these are the streets every single day as a kid he grew up on,” Watt said. “He talked to us about how emotional he got after that first win, getting the game ball from Aaron Rodgers, and just how special it was.”

Nantz, however, appeared to stop paying attention to Watt. He repeated what Watt said at the end of his story.

“He got the game ball too, in the locker room from Aaron Rodgers after. It was quite a moment captured.”

It was an awkward moment, and it was one that had NFL fans missing Tony Romo on Sunday.

Romo remains sidelined by CBS, following his offseason arrest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Romo has had his struggles in the broadcasting booth in recent years, but his chemistry with Nantz is undeniable.

The former Cowboys quarterback is hoping to make it back soon.

Romo hopeful of CBS return

Romo is hopeful that he’ll make it back on the air at CBS.

“As I have taught my three young sons: when you fall short, you stand up and take full responsibility,” he said. “This is an important first step. The harder and more important step is examining the path that brought you here and making the changes necessary to move forward.

“That path requires honesty. None of this is an excuse. These are my failures, and I take that responsibility for them,” he added

“I am working closely with a team of doctors to address my health and make the necessary changes,” Romo said. “I am deeply grateful for the support of my family, my friends, and the NFL community including players, coaches, and owners. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you know.”
