Franchise-altering trade requests rarely become public, but that’s what happened on Thursday when Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck confirmed that he had privately requested a trade several months ago.
Hellebuyck, through his agent Ray Petkau, explained that he had attempted to keep the matter private while allowing Winnipeg time to explore its options, but chose to speak publicly with training camp approaching.
The netminder added that his position “has not changed” and that he believes moving on “is the best path forward” for himself and his family.
The trade request follows comments Hellebuyck made during Winnipeg’s exit interviews in April, when he questioned whether the franchise could assemble a Stanley Cup contender.

Before the NHL Draft, Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff acknowledged the Jets were listening to trade offers for Hellebuyck, and Winnipeg later signed fellow goalie Stuart Skinner in free agency, potentially preparing for life after its longtime starter.
On Thursday, shortly after Hellebuyck went public with his trade request, Cheveldayoff addressed the situation in a statement released by the club.
“Connor has been open with us about his desire for a change,” Cheveldayoff said. “He has been an important part of the Winnipeg Jets organization for many years and we have tremendous respect for what he has accomplished here. While we continue to work through the situation in a thoughtful manner, there is no update at this time.”
No deal has been announced, and there is no indication a trade is imminent.
Hellebuyck remains under contract for five more seasons after signing a seven-year, $59.5 million extension in 2023, but his public statement will add pressure to Cheveldayoff to deal with the situation ahead of the 2026-27 regular season.
