The New York Jets may have found a significant contributor in their wide receiver room after selecting Omar Cooper Jr. with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
The former Indiana standout is expected to play a major role in the Jets' offense next season alongside Pro Bowl receiver Garrett Wilson and Adonai Wilson.
In a strong Jets rookie class, Cooper might be the biggest standout
Through spring practices, Cooper has turned heads, emerging as the team's most impressive rookie.
ESPN New York Jets reporter Rich Cimini noted that Cooper made a strong impression during the team's rookie minicamp and OTAs.
"Cooper was their most impressive rookie in the spring, all but solidifying a spot in the three-receiver package," Cimini wrote. "He's a smooth route runner who adjusted nicely to an NFL-style offense. Because of his physical style and run-after-catch ability, he should be even better when the pads go on in training camp."
Jets Wide Receiver Room Gets Major Upgrade
If Cooper's early momentum carries into training camp and the 2026 NFL season, the Jets could have another impact player in their passing attack. His versatility, physical traits, and ability to create yards after the catch should make him a valuable piece for the Jets' offense heading into next season.
Cooper is coming off an outstanding final season with the Hoosiers; he pulled in 60 receptions for 937 receiving yards while helping lead the program to an undefeated 16-0 season and its first national championship.
He now has a chance to provide an immediate boost to a Jets passing offense that struggled to produce through the air last season.
With Justin Fields under center, New York finished near the bottom of the league in passing yards (2,385) and passing touchdowns (15). Outside of Wilson, the Jets received little consistent production from their wide receiver group.
Jets Overhaul Offense During Busy Offseason

The offense should look a little different next season. Head coach Aaron Glenn hired veteran coach Frank Reich as offensive coordinator. The Jets reunited with veteran quarterback Geno Smith on a one-year deal. The Jets also drafted former Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik with the 110th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
The Jets also bolstered their receiving corps by signing veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick, adding another experienced target.
The Jets are also hoping for a healthy season from Garrett Wilson, who was limited to seven games in 2025 after suffering a right knee sprain. Despite appearing in only seven games, Wilson led the team in receiving yards with 396 while hauling in four touchdowns.
If Cooper continues to build on his impressive spring and can develop chemistry with the Jets’ quarterbacks in Reich's offensive system, he could quickly carve out a significant role on the roster.
If Cooper strong spring is any indication, then Jets fans have plenty of reason to be excited about the team's newest weapon at wide receiver.
