Jessica Pegula’s name is now synonymous with top-tier tennis and the grandest of stages, but her family’s journey is equally extraordinary.
Her father, Terry Pegula, went from a small beginning to a huge fortune before becoming the owner of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres.
How Did Terry Pegula Build His Fortune?
Terry Pegula was born and raised in a rural part of Pennsylvania, where his father was a truck driver and coal miner. He studied petroleum and natural gas engineering at Penn State and started working in the oil industry before deciding to start his own company.
Pegula took out a loan of only $7,500 from family and friends in 1983 to start East Resources, an oil and gas exploration firm that operated mainly in the Appalachian region. The company expanded over the next few decades to become a large privately owned energy firm.

The largest financial success was in 2010 when Pegula sold the majority of East Resources to Royal Dutch Shell for $4.7 billion. He later sold another $1.75 billion in assets, creating the financial foundation for the sports empire that followed.
Pegula’s first foray into professional sports was when he bought the Buffalo Sabres for $189 million in 2011. Three years later, he purchased the Buffalo Bills for $1.4 billion, beating out a group that included interests backed by Donald Trump and Jon Bon Jovi.

Was Jessica Pegula Always a Billionaire Heiress?
Interestingly, Pegula has challenged the notion that she was brought up in extreme luxury. Her family wasn’t wealthy until she was around 17 or 18, so much of her childhood and early tennis development was before her father’s money was where it is now.
Jessica said that her dad was very blue-collar, and that’s what influenced the family. She has also admitted she had a lot of opportunities to take advantage of, but stated that she wanted to make the most of those opportunities.
Jessica started playing tennis at age 7 and eventually developed a career outside of her parents’ business empire. She has won over $25 million in tournament winnings and is a top American player.
This contrast is what makes the Pegula family story so interesting. Terry transformed a $7,500 loan into a multi-billion-dollar fortune, and Jessica has spent years developing her own identity and legacy on the tennis court.
