Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made it clear that he’ll continue to support former quarterback Tony Romo.
After weeks of speculation, CBS Sports finally parted ways with Romo last Friday. This decision felt inevitable after Romo was arrested on July 23 for unsafe passing on the right, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possessing open intoxicants.
“I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years. I approached my role as a game analyst the way I’ve approached everything in my life–with a desire to win and be the best that I can be,” Romo said in a statement. “I’m going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity. I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans.”
Romo joined CBS Sports in 2017 and became quite successful, earning a 10-year, $180 million extension. He most likely agreed to a settlement as part of his split with CBS.

While it’s unclear what’s next for Romo, he’s got the Jones family in his corner.
“Tony is one of the most valued relationships that I have on a personal basis. I love him and I’m sorry that this has evolved this way this year because I enjoyed him so much in what he could bring to the NFL and, frankly, I was proud of him as a former Cowboy,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan.
“Now, having said all of that, he’s just getting started. He really is. I say that with all sincerity. He’s just getting started. And he certainly has made some mistakes. I can’t look in my mirror without seeing what can happen when you experience mistakes. But he realizes that there’s an area of his life that he wants to do better in. That’s been said ad nauseam publicly. He’s got great opportunity ahead of him. I don’t know of anyone, period, that has a better future than Tony Romo. And I’m excited or him. He’s not only got great talent, but he’s a hell of a man.”
Could Romo join the Cowboys?
NFL insider Mike Florio suggested the Cowboys could hire Romo for some kind of role within the franchise.
Over the past year alone, we’ve seen the Atlanta Falcons hire Matt Ryan as their president of football operations and the Miami Dolphins hired Troy Aikman as a consultant.
Maybe, just maybe, “America’s Team” will carve out a front office role for Romo.
