The Dallas Cowboys will enter Week 4 at 1-2, but Jerry Jones isn’t treating everything happening around his franchise in the NFC East as a reason to change his outlook on America’s Team.
Per The Athletic’s Jon Machota, the Cowboys owner addressed the division Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan after the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Chicago Bears on Monday night and the New York Giants traded for former Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
“We are very much in the hunt,” Jones said. “We’re just getting started. We will be better because of the experience that we had with Baltimore (in the Week 3 loss).
“We really are just at the beginning of what I hope is an exciting year for us.”
New York sent Minnesota a 2027 fifth-round pick for McCarthy, the No. 10 pick in 2024, after Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart underwent season-ending surgery. Dart needed surgery to repair the meniscus and MCL in his left knee and was ruled out for at least the remainder of the regular season and deep into the playoffs.
The Giants improved to 2-1 by beating the Tennessee Titans 12-7 on Sunday, with head coach John Harbaugh naming Jameis Winston the starter going forward while McCarthy learns New York’s offense.
A former 2024 NFL Draft No. 10 overall pick, McCarthy started only 10 games with Minnesota last year. McCarthy completed 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2025 before falling to third on the Vikings’ depth chart behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz.

Philadelphia’s Monday loss also altered the early NFC East picture, leaving the 1-2 Cowboys just one game behind the 2-1 Eagles and Giants and the first matchup against the former scheduled for Oct. 26.
Even then, Jones is focused on what Dallas can control after its own tough Week 3 result, addressing the 34-31 loss to the Ravens on international ground.
“There’s no explanation that you’re satisfied with,” Jones said. “None. Let’s be sure that we all understand that. They don’t have one that they’re satisfied with. We made mistakes during that time; there’s no question about it. There’s no explanation. There’s an evaluation of how to not make the same mistakes again, which is what you should be doing. We can’t get that back. No way to get it back. What you can do is use it — if there’s any aspect of it that you want to just not even think happened. Any aspect of it, use it to get better.”
Dallas will visit the Houston Texans in Week 4 on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
