It’s been nearly 25 years since the Dallas Cowboys endured three straight losing seasons and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is determined to avoid that outcome this year. If that means making more mid-season trades, he’s ready for it.
On Tuesday, Jones appeared on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas to discuss the upcoming season and the team’s recent cap restructurings to free up significant cap space for this season. While talking about it, Jones hinted that the Cowboys now have “viable serious room financially” to make a trade if they want.
“It certainly can be used for this year’s team and the timing sure is pretty conspicuously obvious… That does show that we have really viable serious room financially to make [a] trade if we wanted to right now,” Jones said.
Jones stopped short of suggesting who the Cowboys might trade for, but he did indicate that the team was leaning defensively.
The Cowboys in 2026
This time last year the Cowboys had just traded all-world pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. But the team felt his absence deeply as they went on to give up the most points in franchise history.
They later made mid-season trades on defense for All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and linebacker Logan Wilson. Williams signed a contract extension with the Cowboys earlier this offseason while Wilson retired in March.

The defense is expected to be significantly better in 2026, and if the offense remains as good as it was last year, the team could be right in the playoff mix. They have Dak Prescott, Javonte Williams, George Pickens, CeeDee Lamb and Jake Ferguson all playing at a high level and can be pretty dangerous even without a superb defense.
That said, Jones appears intent on making sure that if there are any hiccups along the way, he’ll be able to remedy the situation quickly.
