The Dallas Cowboys’ defense has seen functionally no improvement under first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker. In what may be a last-ditch effort to salvage his job, Parker is moving to the coaches booth.
Appearing on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones announced that Parker would be moving to the coaches’ booth. ESPN’s Todd Archer noted that it’s a similar move that the team made with former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus last year.
“Speaking on @1053thefan , Jerry Jones said defensive coordinator Christian Parker will move from the field to the coaches booth. It’s a move Matt Eberflus made last year as well when things did not go well,” Archer wrote on X.
Struggles in the new regime
Through the first five weeks of this season, the Cowboys are 2-3 overall and have a bottom eight defense in terms of points and yards allowed. They gave up a season-high 419 yards of offense, including 241 yards on the ground, in last Thursday’s loss to the then-winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Cowboys currently have the worst rushing defense in the entire NFL, ranking dead last in attempts, yards and touchdowns. Opposing runners are getting a whopping 5.1 yards per carry.
The passing defense isn’t much better, ranking in the bottom 12 for passing yards and passing TDs allowed.

Christian Parker is only 34 years old but is in his eighth season as an NFL coach. He spent the last two years as the highly-touted passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach of the Philadelphia Eagles and played a big role in the team’s Super Bowl LIX win where they dominated the Kansas City Chiefs.
When the Cowboys landed him as their defensive coordinator at the start of the 2026 offseason, it was seen as a massive coup within the NFC East.
But Jerry Jones is in win-now mode and he’s not going to give Parker much space to learn on the job. Simply put, if the defense doesn’t improve, Jones will not hesitate to get rid of him.
And that goes for any other coach on the Cowboys struggling to get the job done right now.
