The San Antonio Spurs failed to trade Jeremy Sochan before last week's trade deadline, resulting to the team releasing him and making him a free agent.

On Wednesday, the Spurs announced that they have waived Sochan after 28 games with the team this season. He averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.0 assist in a limited role for the franchise.

Sochan, the No. 9 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, had a pretty solid start to his NBA career with the Spurs. He made it to the Rising Stars game in his first two years in the league, which was a promising sign that he would at least be able to become a key contributor for the team.

The young forward put up 11.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 0.8 steals in 27.3 minutes per game in his first three seasons with the Spurs. Under head coach Mitch Johnson this 2025-26 season, however, he saw his role with the team decrease until he fell off the rotation.

In late January, the Spurs gave permission to Sochan's camp to explore potential trade destinations, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line. Unfortunately, despite some interest, no deal materialized.

Now, Sochan will be free to join any interested team once he clears waivers.

Jeremy Sochan's Potential NBA Destinations

It remains to be seen where Sochan will end up after his release from the Spurs. However, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, there were two teams that discussed trading for him before the deadline: the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns.

It is interesting to note that both teams have an open roster spot, so they are in a position to make a move for Sochan if they desire.

Both the Knicks and Suns could certainly use some forward depth, especially since both teams are fighting for a playoff spot in their respective conferences. Sochan's production this season may not have been great, but he has proven in his career that he can contribute when given the chance.

"The Knicks and Suns were among the teams who had trade discussions surrounding former Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan prior to the trade deadline, as I previously reported on @hoopshype," Scotto wrote.

"Something to keep in mind as he becomes a free agent now and both teams have open roster spots."

Sochan is also only 22 years old, so a rebuilding team focused on youth could take a gamble on him and see how he plays for the rest of the season and whether he fits the roster or not.

Considering Sochan's history and skill set, there should be several teams willing to sign him.
