Jedrick Wills Hasn't Played Since 2024, and the Cardinals Could Need Him at Left Tackle Fast

Arizona pulled the 2020 first-round pick off Buffalo's practice squad two days after Paris Johnson Jr. tore his biceps, and a rookie is the other option.

The Arizona Cardinals needed two days to go find another tackle. With Paris Johnson Jr. out for the season because of a torn left biceps, Arizona is signing Jedrick Wills off the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.

Wills was the No. 10 pick in the 2020 draft. He has not played in a regular-season game since 2024, and the Cardinals may not have the luxury of easing him in.

His resume is longer than his recent history suggests. Wills, 27, started 57 of his 58 games across five seasons with the Cleveland Browns and made the PFWA All-Rookie Team at left tackle. After an MCL injury in November 2023 required surgery, he appeared in only five games the next year, and he chose to sit out all of 2025 to get the knee right. He spent this summer in camp with the Chicago Bears, missed the 53-man roster and landed on Buffalo’s practice squad Sept. 1.

Arizona’s first answer at left tackle was Jayden Williams, a seventh-round rookie who has played 18 offensive snaps this season, according to PFF. Johnson had not come off the field. He logged all 277 of the Cardinals’ snaps through four games and earned an 80.8 pass-blocking grade, per PFF, nearly 20 points better than any other Arizona starter up front. Josh Fryar is the other depth option at tackle.

There is a roster rule that matters here. A player signed off another team’s practice squad goes directly to the 53-man roster and has to stay there for at least three weeks, so Wills is more than a tryout. The line around that spot is unsettled as well. Head coach Mike LaFleur has said right guard Isaiah Adams will most likely miss this week with an ankle injury, which would put Jon Gaines II in the lineup.

“I feel for him. It sucks for him first and foremost,” LaFleur said of Johnson, who has now had three straight seasons end early. Arizona plays the Detroit Lions on Sunday, which gives Wills less than a week to learn the offense.
