The New York Yankees have been one of the strongest teams in baseball this season. They entered Thursday’s game with a record of 45-27 and held a commanding 9.5-game lead in the AL East. The team had won eight of its last nine games, including four straight victories heading into the matchup against the Chicago White Sox.

After an impressive debut season with the Yankees, Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been a key contributor this year and is one of the reasons why New York is considered among the favorites to win it all.

Through 69 games, Chisholm is batting .229 with 10 home runs, 30 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. He hit a home run in Wednesday’s 10-5 rout vs Chicago and was looking to continue his impressive form in the series finale.

However, Chisholm’s night was cut short on Thursday as he exited in the fourth inning after fouling a ball off himself. The ball appeared to hit him in a sensitive area, and he was attended to by trainers, with the score tied at 1-1 at the time of the incident.

After leaving the field, Chisholm received backlash from fans, many of whom questioned why he was not wearing a protective cup.

“He just couldn't decide, pre-game, which teammates cup he wanted to borrow,” one fan wrote.

“Damn why he didn’t have the cup on,” another fan added.

“yep...bro thought he was above all that,” a third fan said.

“I don’t care how uncomfortable a cup is, not wearing one as an infielder is NASTY work,” one fan posted.

“How can the Yankees continue to take Jazz Chisholm seriously,” another fan questioned.

“This is why you always wear your cup in baseball,” another fan said.

Chisholm has dealt with several similar issues recently. He most recently sat out Sunday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, with manager Aaron Boone noting that the infielder was a bit beat up.

New York will look to continue its strong form while monitoring his condition closely as it opens a new series against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
