The Detroit Lions’ offense has been one of the most productive units in the NFL over the past few seasons, but it is facing questions on the offensive line in 2026.
Detroit’s offensive line has consistently been a top group in recent years, but with center Cade Mays out for the start of the season and the other starters being mostly unproven outside of left tackle Penei Sewell, success isn’t a surefire bet for them this year.
However, if the offensive line can step up and provide adequate protection for quarterback Jared Goff, expect more of the same from the Lions’ offense.
Offensive Line is the Lions’ X-Factor in 2026

NFL.com’s Dan Parr recently released his projections of the top offenses in the NFL this season, and he has the Lions at No. 4. Parr notes that the offensive line will decide how far the group can go.
“It’s pretty simple. If the new-look offensive line keeps Jared Goff well protected, the offense should have no trouble finishing among the elite,” Parr wrote.
When well protected, there aren’t many quarterbacks in the sport better than Goff. The former No. 1 overall pick has thrown for over 4,400 yards in each of the last four seasons and at least 30 touchdown passes in each of the past three years.
If the offensive line can hold up, Goff should return as a productive pocket passer and lead the Lions’ offense to a consistent attack. Additionally, running back Jahmyr Gibbs and the run game should be dynamic and could become the identity of the offense.
The Lions will kick off the season at home against the New Orleans Saints. That’ll be the first test for the offensive line, and it’s critical they get off to a promising start, or a lot more questions than answers are on the way.
