James Harden has been traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers two days before Thursday's trade deadline. The Los Angeles Clippers received Darius Garland and a second-round pick in the process.
On Monday, reports emerged that the Clippers were in advanced discussions regarding a Harden-Garland swap. Less than 24 hours after that, the two teams reached a deal that is deemed beneficial for all parties.
Harden, at 36 years old, is looking for a team that can compete for a championship. The Clippers, for their part, want a player who can contribute immediately and be a part of their long-term future. Garland, who is 26 and a two-time All-Star, certainly fits the bill.
On the other hand, the Cavs get a player in Harden who could be a difference-maker for them, especially in the playoffs. Cleveland has a good core featuring Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley, but it has consistently failed to go deep in the postseason.
The Cavs were the top team in the East last season with a 64-18 record, but they lost to the Indiana Pacers in the second round. Harden is averaging 25.4 points and 8.1 assists this season, and he certainly gives Cleveland some much-needed experience and an offensive boost.

Is James Harden Playing for the Cavs vs. Clippers?
It's worth noting that Harden has missed the Clippers' last two games due to personal reasons. He is not injured, so he should be available immediately for the Cavs.
Interestingly, the Cavs play the Clippers on Wednesday at Intuit Dome.
That being said, it's not surprising that fans are wondering whether or not Harden will be available to suit up for the Cavs against his former team.
At the time of writing, however, the trade between the Cavaliers and Clippers has yet to be made official. Even if the two teams finalize and announce the trade before their showdown on Wednesday, it seems unlikely that Harden will be able to join Cleveland and play without practice or even meeting with his new teammates.
As for Garland, the 26-year-old guard is currently sidelined with a Grade 1 right big toe sprain. He has not played since Jan. 14.
The Cavaliers play the Sacramento Kings on Saturday, and that is the game in which Harden will likely make his debut with Cleveland.
It remains to be seen whether the Cavs and Clippers will make further moves before the trade deadline in a bid to improve their respective rosters.
