NFL preseason football can occasionally feel a little too serious for games that do not count in the standings. Jameis Winston and Cam Skattebo apparently did not get that memo.
Before the New York Giants faced the Miami Dolphins on Saturday afternoon at Hard Rock Stadium, Winston and Skattebo delivered one of the funniest pregame moments of the weekend. The two Giants teammates broke out an elaborate handshake that quickly caught the attention of the NFL’s official social media account.
The league shared a video of the routine with a laughing emoji and a simple caption: “Jameis Winston and Cam Skattebo’s pregame handshake.”
Considering the personalities involved, it was a fitting way for New York to get ready for its second preseason game.
Jameis Winston, Cam Skattebo Have Some Pregame Fun
Winston and Skattebo might be separated by nearly a decade in age, but there did not appear to be much of a generational gap during their routine.
The veteran quarterback and young running back went through a lengthy sequence that included hand slaps, movements and plenty of personality before eventually heading their separate ways.
It was a fun scene after a much more intense week in Miami.
The Giants and Dolphins held a joint practice Thursday that featured several confrontations between the teams. Winston himself ended up in the middle of the action during one of the altercations, while Giants coach John Harbaugh made it clear he wanted his players to maintain their composure.
Two days later, Winston was making headlines for a much more enjoyable reason.
Skattebo has also become one of the Giants’ most recognizable players. The running back remains a significant part of New York’s backfield plans, even after the team added veteran Najee Harris.
Giants Have Plenty Of Personality In Their Backfield
The handshake also offered a look at something that can be difficult to gauge during August: chemistry.
Winston has long been one of the NFL’s most expressive personalities. The former No. 1 overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner has embraced his role in New York, and his enthusiasm was once again on display Saturday.
Skattebo certainly wasn’t going to leave him hanging.
The Giants entered Saturday’s game looking for their first preseason victory after falling 13-10 to the Minnesota Vikings in their opener. Skattebo was part of New York’s running back rotation in that game, while the Giants continued evaluating players throughout the roster.
Saturday’s game in Miami offers another opportunity for those roster battles to take center stage. New York’s official game-day coverage showed both Winston and Skattebo on the field during pregame preparations.
There will be plenty of time to dissect depth charts, roster cuts and preseason performances before Week 1.
For a few seconds Saturday, Winston and Skattebo were simply having fun.
And judging by that handshake, the Giants may need to devote a section of the playbook to pregame choreography.
