Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is on track for his third-straight 1,200+ yards and 12+ touchdown season. Cincinnati Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase shared his feelings about the two-time Big Ten Receiver of the Year’s dominance in college football.
Smith caught 76 passes for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns while helping Ohio State win the national championship in 2024. He followed that up with 87 catches, 1,243 yards, and 12 touchdowns in 2025. The 20-year-old has charted 33 receptions for 617 yards and seven touchdowns in just four games this season.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Bengals’ Week 4 game, Chase was asked about Smith’s continued success.
“Three years is a long time. … You’re playing at a high level for that long,” Chase said. “You’re playing at Ohio State. You’re setting records. You are one of the best. If not one of the best, you are the best receiver in college.”
Smith has continued to add to his record book this season. Last month, he passed Michael Jenkins to become Ohio State’s all-time leader in receiving yards. He achieved the feat in just 32 games.
Chase revealed the one part of Smith’s game that set the Buckeyes WR apart.
“The dude is crazy good. … If you make contested catches, that’s an A-plus, not a B,” Chase added.
Smith has consistently made difficult catches in tight coverage throughout his Ohio State career. His size and strong hands give him an edge over other wideouts. He has made plays in tight windows and turned difficult throws into big gains. That ability could be one of his biggest weapons as he gears up for the NFL.
Chase Aims to Continue His Great Form in Week 4
While Chase is looking forward to welcoming the upcoming talents, he has his hands full preparing for Cincinnati’s Week 4 home contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Paycor Stadium.
The Bengals WR had an underwhelming start to the season. He recorded just two receptions for 12 yards in the season-opener win over the Buccaneers. Chase exploded in Week 2 during Cincinnati’s 20-6 road victory against the Houston Texans, recording seven receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
The five-time Pro Bowler recorded nine receptions for 98 yards and one touchdown in the Week 3 loss to the Steelers. If Chase manages to get himself wide open, it’d make life a lot easier for Burrow and the Bengals on Sunday.
His role is even more crucial after injuries to Andrei Iosivas and Colbie Young. Those absences led to several roster moves this week. The team waived returner Ke’Shawn Williams, signed WR Mitchell Tinsley from the Texans’ practice squad, and promoted TE Tanner Hudson.
