Jalen Hurts will not play Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles host the Carolina Panthers at Lincoln Financial Field. The team announced Thursday that a follow-up ultrasound Wednesday night showed movement in a small, superficial blood clot in the quarterback’s calf, and that it is still working to “determine the appropriate course of treatment.”
A day earlier, Hurts gave a cryptic update on the calf during his weekly session with reporters at the NovaCare Complex. “It was a very unique experience, to say the least,” Hurts said Wednesday, declining to get into the details leading up to the London game. Tanner McKee is expected to start in his place.
How it happened, according to the Eagles

According to the team’s statement, Hurts was cleated during the Oct. 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He practiced in full that Wednesday and Thursday, then asked for treatment on the calf after Thursday’s session, his first since the game. He was added to the injury report Friday.
An ultrasound on Saturday, after the flight to London, found the clot. Team doctors and doctors in London concluded that “activity and mobility were important” and cleared Hurts to play, while recommending a follow-up scan within 72 hours of the game and the trip home.
Hurts played all 62 offensive snaps in the 19-17 loss to Jacksonville, completing 21 of 40 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown. He dropped back on 43 pass plays and finished with a 60.7 grade, according to PFF.
After treatment Monday and Tuesday, he was back at practice as a full participant Wednesday, still listed with the calf injury. The scan that night is what changed the plan. The Eagles said they have been in contact with the league office throughout.
The timing could hardly be worse. Philadelphia is 2-3 and has lost three straight games, and the team has offered no timeline beyond Sunday. Whatever treatment the doctors settle on will go a long way toward deciding whether this is a one-week absence, with the Dallas Cowboys coming to town for “Sunday Night Football” the following week.
