The biggest storyline surrounding Detroit Lions training camp is running back Jahmyr Gibbs's hold-in and contract talks. The 24-year-old reported to camp but has yet to take the field for practice.
Gibbs has been seeking a contract extension from the Lions for nearly the entire offseason. The franchise exercised the three-time Pro Bowler's fifth-year option in April, but working out a long-term deal has remained the focus.
Many assumed the reason for Gibbs' hold-in was to intensify contract talks with Detroit, but the superstar running back addressed the situation while speaking to the media on Monday and made some confusing comments that only add uncertainty.

After Monday's practice, Gibbs spoke to reporters and said "only time will tell" when he's back on the practice field. Gibbs also stated that he doesn't need a new contract to return and doesn't know why he isn't practicing.
"Nah, it’s not about that," Gibbs said.
"I don't know," Gibbs said when asked why he's not practicing via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
Head coach Dan Campbell mentioned last Thursday that Gibbs reported a back injury to him, so that could be the reason for him sitting out. However, Campbell added on Friday that the injury was not severe.
Gibbs' comments on Monday don't make much sense, as there isn't really any other reason for him not to practice except for ongoing contract negotiations with the Lions. Gibbs isn't the only running back holding in across the league, as Bijan Robinson of the Atlanta Falcons also hasn't practiced in camp so far as he waits for a new deal. Robinson's and Gibbs' situations are linked, as both players will likely reset the market at the position.
The Lions must come to terms with Gibbs on an extension before any unnecessary drama begins. Gibbs is the catalyst of the team's offense, and deserves a lucrative payday that makes him the highest-paid running back in the league annually.
Saquon Barkley is currently making $20.6 million per year in his contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, and Gibbs should exceed that number by a few million. It's time for Detroit to reward Gibbs with a new contract and get him back on the field for camp.
