Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase was injured Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars after a foul from Jarrian Jones. With their star wide receiver out, the Bengals suffered a 22-17 home loss, dropping to 2-2.
The Jaguars are now awaiting potential NFL punishment for Jones after he was flagged for a facemask penalty against Chase.
The Bengals wide receiver caught a short pass at around the 12-minute mark of the second quarter. Trying to stop Chase, Jones grabbed and twisted the receiver’s facemask before Jaguars linebacker Ventrell Miller delivered a high hit that drove Chase’s head into the turf.
Jones was penalized for the facemask, while Miller was not flagged.
Chase stayed down for a long time before getting up. He walked to the blue medical tent and eventually headed to the locker room. He was later ruled out for the remainder of the game with a concussion.
The fifth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft had three catches for 27 yards before his early exit.
Under Rule 12, Section 2, Article 15 of the 2026 NFL rulebook, players may not “grasp and control, twist, turn, push, or pull the facemask or helmet opening of an opponent in any direction.”
Under the NFL’s fines schedule, a first offense carries an $11,941 fine and rises to $17,911 for a second offense.
The league will review Jones’ foul to determine whether to fine him. The NFL typically announces its weekly player accountability update on Saturday afternoons.
Aside from Chase, Cincinnati also lost wide receiver Tee Higgins in the fourth quarter with an adductor injury. Higgins is day-to-day, while Chase must clear the league’s concussion protocol.
Both players’ status for their Week 5 game against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium remains uncertain.
The Jaguars, meanwhile, will face the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday in London, England.
