The Jacksonville Jaguars are not simply waiting for Brian Thomas Jr. to rediscover his downfield production. Locked On Jaguars host Tony Wiggins argued the third-year wide receiver must prove he can finish catches through contact and function in a more complete role before the team can count on him as a true No. 1 option against the Houston Texans.

Thomas arrived as Jacksonville’s 2024 first-round selection and produced more than 1,200 receiving yards as a rookie, but Wiggins said that production alone does not settle the questions around his current fit. This season, Thomas has nine receptions on 18 targets for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Wiggins focused on plays in which Thomas has not secured the ball cleanly before contact arrives, arguing that those moments can prevent an explosive target from completing catches in traffic. He also said defenses will challenge Thomas physically and deny clean outside releases if they believe confidence has become an issue, whether or not that perception is accurate.

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen has built a receiving group that includes wide receivers Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington, Josh Cameron and C.J. Williams. Wiggins’ central point was that the staff’s expectations extend beyond deep routes: Receivers must handle a broad route tree, block, play physically and make routine catches.

The matchup adds a natural comparison with Houston wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., whom Wiggins framed as another talented young receiver facing scrutiny about whether his circumstances or his own game better explain uneven results.

Wiggins set modest expectations for Thomas against Houston, saying he needs to see sustained evidence before projecting a turnaround. For Jacksonville, the next step is simpler: Thomas must create dependable plays when opponents crowd his releases, contest the catch point and force him to win outside his preferred vertical opportunities.
